Acuson Portable Digital Echocardiography System Acuson (formerly Ecton Medical) had identified a need in the ultrasound market for a digital, low cost, high performance, POC system. The idea was to have the unit perform many of the critical functions of larger machines (matching them in performance though not in total capability) in a package and at a price point that would permit more machines to be purchased for POC use. The system also had to look good with excellent fit and finish, be rugged but easy to use and provide pleasing tactile feedback. The program was on a tight budget and schedule, with very real milestones required for ongoing funding and introduction. By providing functional models early in the program that simulated the system's ultimate performance, look and feel, EDGE Medica helped Acuson move the program from concept through final design and into manufacturing.
